In an attempt to get myself writing with more regularity, I plan to use this blog for random "freewriting" sessions.

Fog

It was real foggy tonight so I thought I'd use that as my first theme. So here goes, let's start with 10 minutes writing about "fog".

To move through it required an effort. It was a presence that required dealing with. Heavy, damp, suffocating, it hung, it clung, to the objects of the world. Standing in it muted all visibility, but the ears heard the world anew. Dull thuds echoed through the dark woods as clumps of melting snow dropped in slushy heaps to the forest floor. Animals squealed and cried out. Tree branches creaked and groaned against another. The entire night heaved with unseen movement. Despite being unable to see it, you knew the world was alive around you.

As the fog settled thick into the deepest valleys, the night grew darker and more quiet. Soon, nothing stirred, nothing pushed through the mist, its weight laid heavy upon the earth. Stillness.

Although lacking any intent, the effect it had was one of omens. Witches in torch-lit caves would produce their most powerful spells on nights like this, nights when no living things crept through the earthly shroud and the world was left for shadow and darkness.
